A Safer, More Livable Community

High-quality pre-k for all can be part of a long-term strategy to make the District a safer, more livable community. The social, emotional and academic foundation that children receive in a high-quality pre-k center makes them more likely to succeed in school and better able to interact with their peers. Decades of research tells us that these children are thus less likely to be involved in criminal activity.

If every child is given a quality pre-k opportunity here in the District, Pre-K for All DC’s recent cost-savings analysis reveals that the incarceration rate would fall dramatically. In fact, DC government would save $17.62 million for every cohort of children that graduate from a two-year, high-quality pre-k program. For more information on pre-k as a cost-effective crime prevention measure, refer to Pre-K for All DC’s report, Investing in the Economic Vitality of the District of Columbia through Pre-Kindergarten for All.
